Richard Lloyd Groover, 78, of Canton, PA (Union Twp.) passed away at home Monday morning, October 16, 2017 while surrounded by his devoted family.

Born December 20, 1938 at the family’s home near Gleason; the same home where Richard lived most of his life.  “Rich” or “Dick” to family and friends, was one of four children of the late Edwin and Frances (Kilbourn) Groover.  He graduated from Canton High School with the class of 1956 and played in the first Canton/Troy football game designated as the “Old Shoe Game”.  On Sept. 23, 1961, he married the former Sheryl Hansell in Grover.

Rich’s calling in life was always dairy farming and his beloved lands of Rockside Farms.  In earlier years he was employed by Jones & Brague Mining Co.  and was a logger with his father.  Later Dick worked as a meat cutter at Flickinger’s in Troy and then worked at the Super Duper in Troy and Blossburg.

Dick will be lovingly remembered for his kind hearted, easy-going manner and he made friends easily.  He loved his family, especially the grandkids and enjoyed visiting with them.  Dick and Sheryl also enjoyed traveling the United States.  He was an avid outdoorsman, hunter and fisherman.

He was a member of Ogdensburg Church of Christ, Mountain Run Hunting Club and the Canton Moose Lodge 429.

Surviving is Sheryl, his wife of 56 years, children; Jon (Gayle) Groover of Canton, Amy Groover of Albany, NY and Todd (LouAnn) Groover  of Lemon Grove, CA, six grandchildren; Tyler, Ashlee, Travis, Rachael, Lucas and Rene’e, two great grandchildren; Reagan and Lennon, three siblings; Emily Reep of Canton, Edwina (Gary) Sims of Troy and Dale (Kay) Groover of Penn Yan, NY, his mother-in-law, Ruby Hansell of Canton, an uncle, Lawrence Kilbourn of Roaring Branch, special nephew, David (Barb) Groover of Canton, a sister-in-law and brother-in-law; Kay (Terry) Schanbacher of Connecticut and William Hansell of Fassett, several nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends and neighbors.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his father-in-law and brother-in-law and several aunts and uncles.

Family invites friends to call 12 – 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, at Pepper Funeral Home, 578 Springbrook Dr., Canton.  Rev. Thomas Blackall and Rev. Duane Taylor will officiate the funeral service at 1:30 p.m.
Burial will be in Ogdensburg Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, consider a memorial to Western Alliance EMS, P.O. Box 13 Troy, PA 16947 or to

So sorry to hear about Dick’s passing. I used to work in the meat room with Dick down at the Troy Super Duper. Alan worked in the retail. Dick was a great person to work with and was a lot of fun. Great guy!
