Albertis “Bertie” Ruth Hickok, 91, of Troy, PA, was born at home on the 29th of December 1934, the daughter of Harry and Pearl Probert in Freeland, Pennsylvania. Upon graduation from Freeland High School in 1952, Bertie passed the civil service exam and entered the workforce as a secretary for the Air Force at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. While in the city, she met and fell in love with her sweetheart, Frank. They married in November 1955 and settled in his hometown of Troy, Pennsylvania. Together, they had four children and resided at the Hickok homestead on Porter Road. She held several jobs throughout her lifetime, including work as a nurse’s aide, unit clerk, lunch lady, and as the first-ever cook at the Veterans’ Club in Troy. Bertie rose to the role of Chief Unit Clerk at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA, a position she held with great pride for over 25 years. Many evenings in her younger years were spent at a bowling alley, where she was a fierce competitor and a member of the hall of fame. In her retirement, Bertie took on her favorite position of all —Grandma. Bertie never knew a stranger and would run into a friend everywhere she went, insisting they stop by, as “her door always swings in.” She enjoyed time with family and friends, hosting gatherings, nature, a good round of bingo, card games, scratch-off tickets, and trips to the casino. She is remembered by those who love her for her generosity, warm spirit, and humor. Bertie was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Frank; six older siblings and her daughter-in-law, Shannon Hickok. She is survived by her baby brother, Edwin Probert of Freeland, PA; her children Judy Hickok, Tom (Jackie) Hickok, and Jerry (Laura Piselli) Hickok, all of Troy, PA; and Amy (James) Dallas of Johnstown, PA. Her nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and close friends, including Deb Levan, Jeanie Schoonover, Shirley Brenchley, and Mary Blaise, also survive her. A special thanks to Jess Shipman and Guthrie Hospice for their kindness and compassion in Bertie’s final weeks. Calling hours will be from 11 am-1 pm on Saturday, May 2nd, 2026, at Pepper’s Funeral Home, 578 Springbrook Dr, Canton, PA, with the service to follow at 1 p.m. After the service, Bertie will be laid to rest with her love at Hunt Cemetery on Porter Road in Troy, PA. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Guthrie Hospice in Bertie’s memory. Expressions of sympathy and memories for the family can be submitted online at www.pepperfuneralhomes.com
