Obituary

Alfred D. "Bud" Harris, 85, life-long resident of Armenia Township, passed away peacefully at his residence on Tuesday, July 9, 2024. Alfred Dean, best known as Bud, was born May 30, 1939, on Armenia Mountain, a son of the late Loren and Hazel (Dunbar) Harris. He attended Canton and Troy area schools. On September 26, 1970, Bud married the former Marjory McQueen and together they shared 53 years of marriage. At a young age Bud started working with his uncles, Claude and Lawrence Dunbar in their excavating business and later he established Harris Excavating in 1970.

In his earlier years Bud was an avid snowmobiler. He loved taking trips around the mountain, never getting lost because he knew the Armenia Mountain like the back of his hand. He enjoyed woodworking and hunting. Bud was a very hard worker and a talented equipment operator. He was maybe a little stubborn, but he was a big man with a big heart. His smile and laugh were contagious, and he would help anyone anytime he could. His family was most significant to Bud, especially his grandchildren.

Bud leaves behind his wife; Marjory, at home, son; Steve (Nicole) Harris of Armenia Mt.,  grandchildren; Anson and Nora, siblings; Pearl Harris of SD, Phyllis Harris, and Marie Harris all of Armenia Mt. and Sharon Hulslander of Ulster, nieces and nephews, Loren "Stub" (Helen) Wilston of SD, Lyle (Sue) Thomas, Pam (Steve) Fowler all of Canton, Linda (Bill) Pierce of Troy, Brad Thomas of Armenia Mt., Peg Hartford of Shunk, Sheila Porter, Rich Porter both of Canton, Howard (Tami) Shedden of Covington, Kylie (Jerry) Slater of Ulster, several great nieces, great nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors.

Besides his parents, Bud was predeceased by an infant daughter, Elaine, three uncles, Lawrence, Claude and Lewis Dunbar, two sisters and their spouses, Minnie Harris, Lila (Thomas) Thomas, Mable (Art Porter) (Bryce Shedden Sr) Shedden, brother-in-law, Dick Hulslander, nieces, Cheryl Porter and Lynnette Hulslander.

In keeping with Bud's wishes there will be no services. Burial in Union cemetery in East Smithfield will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Pepper Funeral Home and Cremation Facility, 578 Springbrook Drive in Canton is assisting the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers memorial donations in Bud's name may be directed to Guthrie Hospice, 421 Tomahawk Road, Towanda, PA 18848.
