Obituary

Ellen Suzanne (Judson) Foust, aged 88, a well-known resident of Granville Summit, PA, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on July 22, 2024.

Ellen, known by family and friends as Susie or Jud, was born May 24, 1936, in Columbia Cross Roads, PA, to Olive and James Judson.  She graduated from Troy Area High School, Class of 1954, and Mansfield University, Class of 1958, with a major in Home Economics. As she was leaving town to start her career, she stopped to say goodbye to Joey Foust (also from Troy whom she met at the Mountain Lake dance pavilion) and he asked, "Why don't you stay and marry me instead?" So, on June 21, 1959, Ellen married Joey, the love of her life. They had 65 wonderful years together and raised five children. In addition to owning and operating their dairy farm, they owned Foust Busing and Foust Trucking for many years.

After getting married, Ellen worked at Children and Youth Services until becoming a full-time mother, volunteer, and eventually a school bus driver for their school bus business for over 30 years. While raising her family and driving bus, she was a pillar of the Troy and surrounding communities, volunteering and serving as a 4-H Leader; Treasurer of the Troy Fair; Treasurer of  the Alparon Park Association Board of Directors; Cooperative Extension Board of Directors; Bureau of Children and Youth Services Board of Directors; 4H BLaST Intermediate Unit Board of Directors; Treasurer of the Tim Leonard Rod & Gun Club; and served on the Troy Maple Festival Committee for many years. She was also a devoted member of the Windfall Methodist Church, serving as a member of United Methodist Women and as the church organist for over 50 years. A fierce supporter of the Troy Area School District, Ellen served on the Troy Area School District Board of Directors, notably as the first female to be elected to the board and was Vice President of the Troy Area School District Foundation. She was recognized for her many contributions through her induction into the Troy Area School District Foundation's Distinguished Alumni Hall, where her portrait hangs on the wall among other recipients. The Pennsylvania State Fair Association awarded her the Zone Person of the Year Award for her years of service. She was also recognized as Windfall Grange's Community Citizen of the Year and a 60+ year member. If an organization needed help, Ellen was the first one to volunteer (perhaps to get a reprieve from raising five young children)!

In 1989, Ellen & Joey bought a 90-year-old Soo Line train caboose that now sits on their property next to a railroad train station where Joey's father was employed. Ellen restored and remodeled the caboose and collected memorabilia that is displayed throughout its interior. For years, visitors have come from all around to see this interesting piece of railroad history.

Ellen loved spending time at their cottage on Lake Ondawa in Big Pond and loved to 'tinker' there. She loved Penn State football, could play any song on the piano, loved to build, fix and remodel things, sewed beautiful clothes, quilts and baby gifts, canned fruits and vegetables, was an excellent baker, a wonderful wife, mother and friend. She was a cheerful, kind and generous soul who did innumerable acts of kindness and charitable acts and was truly an unsung heroine and an inspiration to her family and friends. Everyone loved Ellen and she will be greatly missed by family, friends and the community.

Ellen is survived by her loving husband Joey of 65 years; children Libby (Dorothy) Foust of Trumansburg, NY; Kathy (Jere) Warner of State College, PA; Barry (Karen) Foust of Gettysburg, PA; Julie (Don) Volpe of St. Petersburg, FL; Jennifer (Thaddeus) Schwartz of College Grove, TN; nine grandchildren, Natalie (Koy) Shaffer, of Ft.
