Obituary

Gary L. Butcher, 74, life-long resident of Granville Center, PA, passed away on Friday evening, February 2, 2024, at his home following a brief period of declining health.

Gary Lee Butcher was born November 12, 1949, in Troy, a son to the late Harry and Margaret (Schofield) Butcher. As a youngster he grew up in Granville Center and attended the Troy Area Schools, graduating with the class of 1967. After graduation, Gary worked on his family's dairy farm, later acquiring the farm from his parents in 1977.


On May 30, 1970, he married the former Esther Pelton in Monroeton. Together they shared 53 years of devoted marriage and raised a son and two daughters.

Throughout his life, Gary's passion was seeing to the daily operations and working the land of the Gar-Est Dairy Farm. He also enjoyed hunting, classic cars and music, especially Elvis. In earlier years, he played electric guitar in a local band. Gary was a true steward of his land and farm and due to health reasons, he reluctantly sold the cows, retiring in 2023.

He leaves behind his beloved wife, Esther, two daughters, April (Bill) Barnes of Danville, Angel (Richard) Gray of Poultney, VT, a daughter in law, Joanna Butcher of Roaring Branch, grandchildren, Jacob Butcher, Travis (Cassidy) Butcher, Allyson Butcher, Alex Bishop, Luke, Lauren, Danica and Zachary Barnes, Isabella and Sophia Gray, great grandchildren, Sophia and Wrenley, a brother, Dale (Ida) Butcher of Granville Summit, sisters in law, Bea Butcher of Florida, Beatrice Butcher of Granville Summit, as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and a dear friend, Wayne Clark of Granville Summit.

Besides his parents, Gary was predeceased by his son, Wade Gary Butcher in 2010, siblings, Virginia "Blondie" Ward, Ronald and James Butcher.

In keeping with Gary's expressed wishes there will be no public services. A private burial will be held at the convenience of the family.

Pepper Funeral Home and Cremation Facility, 578 Springbrook Drive in Canton is assisting the family with arrangements.
