George Cheesman Sr., 85, of Shunk, PA passed away at home on Friday morning, February 16, 2018.
George August Cheesman was born August 30, 1932 in Camden, NJ, the youngest child of the late George and Freida (Eschel) Cheesman.After graduating in 1951 from Haddon Heights, NJ High School, George worked at the Sun Ship Yards in Chester, PA, retiring in 1982 as the ship yard's superintendent.He also was a talented carpenter and helped build several homes.On September 24, 1976, George married the former Berneda Ellen "Peggy" Sullivan in Magnolia, NJ.
An avid sportsman, George appreciated all nature's beauty.In earlier years he loved fishing in the ocean and hunting in the mountains.He always worked a large vegetable garden and tended beautiful flowerbeds. George also enjoyed just watching the wildlife from his porch with a favorite beverage.
Surviving is Peggy, his beloved wife of 41 years, eight children; George Jr. (Sue) Cheesman of Franklinville, NJ, Barbara (Mike) Elliott of Florida, Laurie (Larry) Wesneski and Shirley (Gary) Stone all of Canton, Sandy (Denny) Bennett of Hop Bottom, Gail (Will) Long of Massachusetts, Levi (Meg) May of Delaware and Rich (Connie) May of Ithaca, NY, several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, two siblings; Ray Cheesman of New York state and Mable Van Fossen of New Jersey, many nieces, nephews and cousins.
George was predeceased by a daughter, Nancy Cassario in 2011 and grandson, Davin Ward in 2001.
Family invites friends to call from 12 -1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20, at Pepper Funeral Home and Cremation Facility, 578 Springbrook Dr., Canton.Rev. Herbert Eby will officiate the funeral service at 1 p.m. Interment will be private.
