In Loving Memory of

Joan Marie (Belawske) Austin, lovingly known as Joanie, of Elmira, New York passed away on December 17, 2025, at the age of 69. Born April 8, 1956, in Canton, Pennsylvania, to the late John and Mabel (Carl) Belawske, Joan grew up surrounded by family and friends. She graduated from Canton High School with the class of 1974.  In 1992, she moved to New York, where she built a beautiful life filled with laughter, kindness, and unforgettable memories.

Joan was a woman of strength, grace, and style. After a stylish and fun career in retail management, she devoted her time to volunteering at Catholic Charities, where she found joy in helping with Back-to-School and Christmas events. Wrapping gifts for families during the holidays was one of her favorite traditions—so much so that she even roped her close friend, Cindy, into joining her. She loved the team calling her "Joanie Pony" while volunteering. Her generosity and warmth touched countless lives. Even the staff as she was always urging them to "take a break" in the most Joanie Pony/Mom way.

Known for her impeccable fashion and jewelry sense, Joan had more clothes, shoes and jewelry than she could count, yet she always looked effortlessly elegant. She also shared a love for classic cars, especially her red 1985 Dodge 600 gifted by her beloved Honey, Tom Austin. Together, they traveled to car shows across the region, proudly bringing home several awards.

Joan is survived and celebrated by her beloved Honey, Tom Austin; her children Jason (Jeannie) Quail, Lacy (John) Quail, Danny (Noel) Quail, and Tommy (Karen) Austin; and her ten cherished grandchildren: JonLuc, Jarred, Jaiden, Lane, Liam, Novalee, Emmitt, Miles, Lily, and Livy. She is also survived and celebrated by her siblings Max Belawske and Marge Chapel, along with many loved nieces and nephews and cousins, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and friends.

Joan was preceded and welcomed in death by her parents John and Mabel Belawske, stepfather Bill Wightman, siblings Carl and Paul Belawske, Madeline (Belawske) Moretz, and brothers-in-laws Steve and Ed Austin.

Joan was "Mom" to many beyond her own family, treating everyone with love and care. She was a light that cannot be dimmed—the strongest woman and mother anyone could hope to know. As our Mother and Tom's wife this woman was lionhearted. A fierce warrior who no matter the situation she would always do what she could to make it the best. To her grandchildren she was a Nina and a Ma who loved her grandkids unconditionally-they were her second lease on life. We never knew anything but love and devotion. A formidable force that you wouldn't want to mess with.  She passed not defeated by illness but as a warrior who shined in light surrounded by love.

In place of flowers, donations may be made to Catholic Charities of Chemung and Schuyler County, 215 East Church St. Elmira, NY 14901 with Joan's name in the memo. Contributions will support Back-to-School and Christmas programs, honoring her passion for helping families. The family will hold a Celebration of Life in April to honor Joan's incredible legacy.
