Obituary

Michael L. Leighton, 81, of Troy, passed away at his home on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, with his loving family by his side. Born on June 27, 1944, in West Chester, Pennsylvania, Michael was the son of the late Roy Leighton and Barbara (Smith) Leighton. He attended Henderson High School in West Chester and graduated with the Class of 1963, where he was the captain of his high school football team.

After high school, Michael worked at Auto Car in Exton before proudly joining the United States Army in 1965, serving as Military Police with the 101st Airborne Division. He was honorably discharged in 1967. In 1968, he married Pat Smith, and together they shared 33 years of marriage and raised two daughters until Pat’s passing in 2001. Michael later married Nancy Carey in 2006, and they shared 20 years of devoted marriage until his passing. Following his military service, Michael worked for Lukens Steel RR before establishing his own excavating company, which he operated until retiring in 2007.

Michael grew up loving any game that was being played, always eager to jump in and be part of the fun. He was well liked and deeply loyal, known as a dependable friend to many throughout both Chester and Bradford Counties. Mike never hesitated to help anyone who needed a hand. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing, and he was an excellent marksman. He loved following Troy and Canton football, and he and Nancy shared many years caring for and riding their beloved horses.

Surviving Michael are his wife, Nancy, at home; his daughter, Julie; his sister, Susan; his stepdaughter, Beth; his stepsons, Brian and Jim; four step‑grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his parents and his first wife, Pat, he was predeceased by a daughter, Lisa and his sister, Barb.

Michael’s family extends their heartfelt thanks to UPMC Hospice for their compassionate care.
