Obituary

Norvin "Butch" Holmes, 80, life-time resident of Canton, passed away very unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 13, 2024, at the Troy Community Hospital. Norvin Grant Holmes was born October 11, 1943, in the Ross Maternity Home in Canton.  He was one of five children born to the late Rodman and Ethel (Keagle) Holmes. As a young man, Butch, as known by most, attended Canton Area Schools and was a graduate of the class of 1961. Shortly after graduation, Butch married the love of his life, the former Donna Smith on July 29, 1961, in Avis, PA.  Together they shared 62 years of devoted marriage and raised two sons. He was very active in the community and served as a member of the Canton Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ), Canton Rotary Club, Canton Moose Lodge 429, Canton Innes Hose Fire Company, served on the Canton Borough Council and was a life member of the Wheel Inn.

Butch was a hard worker; never one to have idle hands. He was employed by Eureka in Troy and later held construction jobs throughout the area. Subsequently, Butch was co-owner of Canton Building Supply, as well as, proprietor of Butch's Whitewash, where he serviced many area farms throughout the years. He was also employed by Vermilya's Milk Hauling and most recently PennDOT for several years until his retirement.

In his earlier years, he raced cars which he truly enjoyed and always fondly remembered.

Butch leaves behind his sons; Norvin "Mooch" (Janet) Holmes Jr., William "Will" Holmes, grandchildren, Ty (Ashley) Holmes, Cale (Avery) Holmes, great grandchildren, Wesson, Adelyn, Sawyer, siblings, Rodman (Carol) Holmes Jr., Kathy (Garry) Baumunk, sister-law-in and brother-in-law, Kathy Bradway, Richard Smith, a special niece, Pam Hoffman and his beloved neighbors, Gordy and Trisha Fleming, several special nieces, nephews, cousins neighbors and dear friends.

In addition to his parents and beloved wife, Butch was predeceased by an infant daughter; Brenda in 1962, sister and brother-in-law, Janice (Mike) Dieffenbach, brother, Robert Holmes, and his very special friends, Lennie Fairchild, Bill "Wimpit" Temple and Jack Lee.

Family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 16, 2024, at the Pepper Funeral Home and Cremation Facility, 578 Springbrook Drive in Canton. A funeral service to celebrate his life will follow at 2 p.m. with Pastor George Ogden, officiating. Burial will follow in the Park Cemetery, Canton. Memorial donations in Butch's loving memory may be directed to the Park Cemetery Association, C/O 11921 Rt. 14 Canton, Pa. 17724.
