Obituary

Norwood E. Harkness, 88, life-time resident of Gillett, PA went to his rest early Thursday morning April 16, 2026, at the Twin Oaks Personal Care Home in Granville Summit.

Norwood Elwin was born October 8, 1937, at his parent’s home in South Creek Township, he was one of three children of the late Elwin E. and Dorothy D. (Vernier) Harkness.

Norwood graduated from Troy Area Schools with the class of 1955 before continuing his education at Penn State, where he received a bachelor’s degree in dairy science in 1959.

After college, Norwood returned home and took over his parents' dairy business, Twin Lilacs Farm.

He managed the farm's operations until he retired in 2004. Mr. Harkness never liked to sit idle, and for a time, he taught high school science in Elmira, New York.

Norwood maintained an active interest in outdoor activities throughout his life, including hunting, fishing, and participating in baseball and softball during his earlier years. He demonstrated a strong religious faith and was a dedicated member of Gillett Baptist Church.

He is survived by; a sister, Arlene D. Harkness and a brother, Lee J. Harkness, both of Gillett. Nieces and nephews, Linda (George) Slobodnyak of Horseheads NY, Tony (Mindy) Sterling of Gillett, Lynette (Rob) Moore of Monroe, GA and Douglas Harkness of Williamsport, grand nieces, Kailyn Sterling of Gillett, and Kaley (Gerry) Ulmer of Drytown, PA, great-grandnephews, Bennett and Dawson Ulmer, many cousins, neighbors and dear friends.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a sister-in-law Doris Y. Harkness.

Details regarding a celebration of Norwood’s life will be provided at a later date. A private burial will take place in the Gillett cemetery at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be directed to the Gillett Baptist Church in honor of Norwood Harkness.
