IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Terry E.
Detweiler
August 2, 1954 – September 26, 2024
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Terry E. Detweiler, who went home to be with the Lord unexpectedly on September 26, 2024. He leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and service that touched the lives of all who knew him.
Born on August 2, 1954, in Bedminster, PA, to Elmer and Alice (Alderfer) Detweiler, graduated from Christopher Dock High School in 1972, and moved to Bradford County to start a dairy farm in 1974. Terry lived a life marked by selfless devotion. As a servant leader, he was known for his humility, wisdom, and tireless commitment to others. He led by example, always putting the needs of others before his own, whether it was in his professional life, his family, or his church.
Throughout his life, Terry worked in farming, construction, as the owner of Barnstead Pantry, and sold John Deere equipment. His impact can be seen in what he built, including the First Citizens Bank in Troy, New Life Church and Gym in Canton, and his home in Alba. His influence is also evident when you see a neighbor driving a John Deere tractor or someone building with styrofoam blocks. Terry's presence brought strength and encouragement, and his impact will continue to ripple through the lives of those he loved and supported. His strong character is a lasting example, shaping the lives of those who had the privilege of knowing and learning from him.
Outside of his many roles, Terry had a deep connection with the outdoors. He found peace in nature and joy in spending time in the wilderness, whether hiking, hunting, or simply enjoying God's creation. His love for hunting was not just a hobby, but a way to bond with his Dad, uncles, brothers, children, sons-in-laws, grandkids and friends, creating lasting memories.
A faithful follower of Christ, Terry was a founding member of New Life Church where he worshiped for 50 years, serving as an Elder and leading yearly missions' trips to Haiti and Nicaragua.
At the heart of Terry's life was his deep love for his family. A devoted husband to his beloved wife, Martha J. (Coles) Detweiler for 52 wonderful years, he was a constant source of love, support, and unwavering dedication. Together, they built a strong and enduring partnership, rooted in faith. They just returned from a life-long dream vacation to see the Northwest United States along with National Parks as part of their 50th anniversary celebration.
Terry also cherished his role as a father to Tanya, Missy, Becky, Rachel and Zach whom he loved with all his heart. His greatest joy came from spending time with his family, especially while helping them tackle their many home improvement projects.
Terry is survived by his wife Marti; his father Elmer; his children Tanya Route and her husband Craig, Missy Davis and her husband Nate, Becky Bellows and her husband Greg, Rachel Bown and her husband Ryan, and Zach Detweiler and his wife Nicole; his grandchildren Connor and Taylor Route, Trevor and Kelsey Route, Carter Route, Simeon Davis (Reagan), Sydney and Derek Buhrman, Shayna Davis, Cameron Bellows (Jordan), Weston Bellows, Braydon Bown, Nolan Bown, Isaiah Detweiler, and Jackson Detweiler; and great-grandchildren Paisley, Hazel, and Hudson Route; his siblings Glenda Moyer and her husband Glenn, Shirley Marlin and her husband Lewis, Kathy Walker and her husband David, Mark Detweiler and his wife Sandy, and Rick Detweiler and his wife Wendy; his in-laws Nancy (Rothenberger) Coles, Faye Kauffman (Don), and Gaf Coles (Patti). Along with Glen and Jana Kauffman and countless other friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother Alice Detweiler and his father-in-law James Coles.
A celebration of Terry's life will be held at New Life Church on McMurray Road in Canton on Saturday, October 5 at 1:00 PM.
