Obituary

Thomas G. Gray, age 77, of Williamsport, PA, passed away peacefully, at the Duke Regional Hospital, in Durham, North Carolina, on Sunday November 30, 2014 . Born December 8, 1936 in Morris Run, PA, he was the son of the late Alexander and Kathryn Gray of Blossburg, PA. Tom is predeceased by his wife, Carol A. (Whitford) Gray, who passed away in 2009. He is survived by his two daughters, Jennifer A. Roberts, York, PA, Andrea M. LaManna and husband, Tony, of York, PA, two sons, Thomas A. Gray and wife, Kathy Franz, of Durham, N.C., and Stephen A. Gray and wife Courtney, of Durham, N.C. Tom is also survived by his sister, Shirley Czap, of Williamsport, PA and his nine grandchildren.

As a graduate of the former Blossburg High School (now North Penn High School), Tom was passionate about sports. He played basketball, soccer and American Legion baseball. As a high school junior and senior, he earned all-county honors as the center on the Blossburg High School basketball team and averaged 20 points per game. Although Blossburg did not have prep baseball at the time, his pitching skills drew some interest from the then Brooklyn Dodgers. Gray, however, chose to attend college at Kings College and then Lock Haven State College to complete an undergraduate degree in physical education. While a student at Lock Haven, he participated in baseball and soccer. As starting half-back for the Lock Haven Soccer team, Tom was very proud of the team's 1956 conference soccer title. After college, Tom earned a master's degree in physical education at Temple University and went on to start an elementary phys. ed. teaching career. He stayed involved in athletics through participating in fast-pitch softball. His career led him to teach lifetime sports, such as volleyball and weight training, at Williamsport Area Community College (now Penn College). A 1992 induction into the Tioga County Hall of Fame was a humbling experience for Tom. He was quoted as saying "I am honored and humbled by this award. It is tough to come up with the words." and "This is something special".

Married for 46 years to his wife Carol, they enjoyed going out to dinner and traveling to visit their grown children and grandchildren. Tom was an avid hunter and fly fisherman. These favorite activities were enjoyed near their cabin in Trout Run, PA Known as "Jake" by many of his extended family, he will be remembered for his sense of humor and his greatest accomplishment of being a wonderful father to his four children.

A visitation for friends and family will take place at the Zwicharowski Funeral Home, 314 Granger St., Blossburg, PA on Saturday, December 6, 2014, from 9:30 A.M. until 10:30 A.M.
